Mackay Whirlybirds

Hot, stuffy rooms and roof spaces that feel like ovens can drive up cooling costs and reduce your roof’s lifespan. That’s where whirlybirds come in.

At Bradshaw Plumbing & Roofing, we install reliable, low-maintenance whirlybird ventilation systems throughout Mackay and surrounding areas, helping homes and businesses stay cooler and better ventilated all year round. Whirlybirds are wind-powered roof vents that pull hot air out of your ceiling cavity, promoting continuous airflow without electricity.

Removing heat and moisture from your roof space helps reduce the strain on your air conditioner, prevent mould and condensation, and extend the life of your roofing materials. Whether upgrading an older property or adding ventilation to a new build, our team ensures correct placement and secure installation on metal and tiled roofs.

Stay cool, save on energy, and breathe easier. Call Bradshaw Plumbing & Roofing at 0417 814 548 to book your whirlybird installation today.

Simple & Effective Ventilation

Installing a whirlybird might be one of the easiest upgrades you’ll ever get done, but the benefits are enormous. In Mackay’s climate, attic and roof spaces can reach extreme temperatures, especially in summer. That heat can trickle down into your living areas, forcing your air conditioner to work harder and increasing energy bills.

A whirlybird removes that hot air, creating a more stable indoor environment. But the benefits don’t stop there. Whirlybirds also reduce moisture build-up, which prevents mould growth, wood rot, and corrosion.

This makes them a smart choice for homes and sheds, garages, commercial sites, and rental properties. They're quiet, durable, and require little to no maintenance. Plus, they’re powered by wind, so there are no running costs.

Whether you're after a single unit or multiple vents across a large roof, we’ll assess your needs and ensure the job is done right, with minimal disruption and long-term performance.

All You Need To Know

  • Are whirlybirds effective at cooling a house?

While whirlybirds won’t cool your home like an air conditioner, they make a noticeable difference by reducing the temperature inside your roof cavity. They create a vacuum effect: as wind spins the turbine, hot air is pulled out of the roof space, allowing cooler air to circulate.

  • Can whirlybirds work without wind?

Whirlybirds rely on wind to spin the turbine and ventilate the roof cavity. However, even in light breezes or still conditions, the heat inside your roof causes air to rise naturally, creating a passive airflow that allows some hot air to escape. For areas with little wind or higher ventilation needs, some choose to install a combination of whirlybirds and powered roof vents.

  • How many whirlybirds do I need for my roof?

Generally, one whirlybird covers around 90 to 100 square metres of roof space. One or two is often enough for standard-sized homes, but homes with multiple levels, large roof spans, or minimal eaves ventilation may benefit from additional units.
